Atlas Mountains road trip
Guides & tips for travelling in Morocco
The Atlas is Morocco on a grand scale: dizzying passes, earthen kasbahs, oases and villages clinging to the mountainside. Here are the finest roads and how to travel them — without the stress of driving.
The legendary Atlas roads
The Tizi n'Tichka pass (N9)
The star: 2,260 m of altitude, spectacular switchbacks between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, breathtaking viewpoints. Wide and secure today, but demanding — ideal for sitting back and enjoying the scenery.
The Tizi n'Test (mountain road to Agadir)
Wilder and twistier, linking Marrakech to Taroudant via the Souss valley. Exceptional views, best for fans of characterful roads.
The Dades & Todra gorges
To the south-east, two spectacular canyons: the famous Dades switchbacks and the vertiginous Todra cliffs (300 m high). The heart of the "land of kasbahs."
The Valley of Roses
In spring (April–May), the Kelaât M'Gouna region is carpeted in roses — a fragrant harvest and a festival. A rose-tinted interlude between gorges.
A reference road-trip itinerary (3–4 days)
- 1. Day 1 — Marrakech → Tichka pass → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate (overnight).
- 2. Day 2 — Ouarzazate → Valley of Roses → Dades Gorges (overnight in the switchbacks).
- 3. Day 3 — Dades → Todra Gorges → Tinghir palm groves (overnight, or on to Merzouga).
- 4. Day 4 (desert option) — descend to Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, night in a bivouac.
Variations: loop back to Marrakech, or continue to Fes via the Middle Atlas (Midelt, Azrou, Ifrane).
Tips for a successful road trip
- When to go — spring and autumn (ideal). Winter: snow possible on the passes (beautiful, but plan ahead). Summer: hot in the south, cool at altitude.
- Pace — don't underestimate mountain driving times; plan short stages to enjoy it.
- The stops — kasbahs, cooperatives, viewpoints — the magic is in the halts.
- Driving — winding roads, herds, changing weather. An experienced local driver is a real plus (safety + local knowledge).
- Accommodation — kasbahs and guesthouses offer unforgettable nights; book in high season.
