The best day trips from Marrakech
Guides & tips for travelling in Morocco
Marrakech is Morocco's best base for exploring: mountains, desert, ocean and film-set villages are all within a day's reach. Here are our favourite day trips, sorted by distance, to help you plan your stay.
Under an hour: the quick escape
Ourika Valley (45 min)
A cool river, Berber villages, the Setti Fatma waterfalls and lunch by the water. Perfect for a first taste of the High Atlas, as a half or full day.
Agafay Desert (45 min)
The closest "desert" to Marrakech: stone dunes, sunset, camel ride and dinner under the stars. Ideal for a magical evening without going all the way to Merzouga.
Imlil & Toubkal Valley (1h30)
At the foot of North Africa's highest peak: perched villages, orchards, accessible hikes and Berber hospitality.
2–3 hours: the nature day
Ouzoud Waterfalls (2h30)
Morocco's highest falls (110 m), free-roaming macaques, a boat ride and lunch facing the water.
Essaouira (2h30)
The Atlantic, the UNESCO medina, the blue port and an argan-grove stop on the way. A breath of sea air.
The big day: cinema & mountains
Ait Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate (4h, via the Tichka pass)
Morocco's most famous UNESCO ksar, backdrop to Gladiator and Game of Thrones, via the country's finest mountain road.
Which day trip to choose?
| You want… | Our pick |

| A magical evening (couples) | Agafay at sunset |
| Water and nature | Ouzoud |
| Ocean and art | Essaouira |
| Cinema and kasbahs | Ait Ben Haddou |
| Hiking | Imlil |
Why a private day trip rather than a group tour?
Bus tours leave early, return late, and string together commercial stops. With a dedicated private driver it's your day: depart at your chosen time, stop as you please, and a local who knows the good spots. All at a fixed price confirmed in advance.
