Things to do in Marrakech

Guides & tips for travelling in Morocco

Marrakech isn't visited, it's lived. Between the frenzy of Jemaa el-Fna, the calm of secret gardens and the gates of the High Atlas, here are the must-sees — and how to enjoy them without wasting time or energy.

The historic heart (medina)

  • Jemaa el-Fna square — the beating heart of Marrakech. Empty in the morning, a living theatre at night (storytellers, musicians, juice and food stalls). A must at sunset from a café terrace.
  • The souks — a maze of artisans (leather, lamps, spices, rugs). Haggle with a smile, it's an art.
  • Ben Youssef Madrasa — a former Quranic school, a jewel of architecture and zellige, beautifully restored.
  • Bahia Palace — courtyards, gardens and painted ceilings of rare refinement.
  • Koutoubia — the emblematic mosque and minaret (exterior; visits reserved for worshippers).

Gardens & art

  • Majorelle Garden & YSL Museum — Majorelle blue, the cacti, and Yves Saint Laurent's legacy. Book ahead, it's very busy.
  • Le Jardin Secret — a peaceful oasis in the heart of the medina.
  • Menara & Agdal — historic basins and olive groves, perfect for a breather.

Relaxation & the good life

  • Hammam & spa — from a local hammam to a high-end riad spa, a rite of passage.
  • Dinner on a terrace overlooking the Koutoubia or the medina rooftops.
  • The palm grove — a camel or buggy ride north of the city.

Marrakech, the perfect base for the Atlas and beyond

One of Marrakech's great strengths: you can escape in an hour to spectacular landscapes.

How many days for Marrakech?

  • 2 days — medina (Jemaa el-Fna, souks, Bahia, Ben Youssef) + Majorelle + a sunset terrace.
  • 3–4 days — add a day trip (Ourika or Agafay) and a half-day of relaxation (hammam).
  • 5+ days — combine with Essaouira, Ouzoud or an Atlas/desert escape.

Practical tips

  • Best time — spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Nov). Summer is very hot (go out early).
  • Dress — casual but modest in the medina and at religious sites.
  • Getting around — the medina is walkable; for Majorelle, the palm grove, day trips or the airport, a private driver saves precious time.
  • Book the headline sights (Majorelle, museums) ahead in high season.

Enjoy Marrakech stress-free

Marrakech can be exhausting if you're chasing taxis and getting lost between sights. With a dedicated private driver, you string together Majorelle in the morning, a chosen lunch, an afternoon day trip, and the airport on your last day — at your pace, at a fixed price confirmed in advance.
